How I help with IEPs and 504 plans

  • Requesting assessments. I draft assessment requests that start California's legal clock — 15 days for the district to propose an assessment plan, 60 days from your consent to assess and meet — and I push back when districts stall.
  • Challenging weak or wrong evaluations. When a district's assessment misses your child's needs, I pursue an independent educational evaluation (IEE) at the district's expense.
  • Eligibility disputes. If your child was found "not eligible" and you disagree — a common outcome for bright kids with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, or anxiety — I build the case for qualification.
  • Reviewing and negotiating plans. I review draft IEPs and 504 plans line by line: are the goals measurable, the services specific, the placement right? Vague plans are unenforceable plans.
  • Attending IEP and 504 meetings. I join meetings with families — at the table or behind the scenes — so the district's team hears your concerns as legal positions, not suggestions.
  • Enforcing the plan. When services aren't delivered, I pursue compliance complaints, compensatory education, and, when necessary, due process.

Common signs your child needs an advocate

The school says "let's wait and see" while your child falls further behind. Grades are fine, but homework takes hours and ends in tears. The IEP looks the same every year while the goals never get met. Services listed in the plan quietly don't happen. The school suggests a 504 plan when your child needs real specialized instruction. Any one of these is worth a phone call.
